“The pianoforte stood in a part of the room separated from the rest by a screen of Grecian columns.” (March 1, 1814)
This layout was inspired by Robert Adams,
who used it at Derby House, No. 26 Grosvenor Square, when he remodelled its
interior in 1773/4 (John Summerson, Georgian
London, p. 147) and in the library at Kenwood House, Middlesex, completed
before 1770 (Olive Cook, English Country
Houses, colour plate opposite p. 207).
The drawing room at Hawskfield Manor
would not have been quite as ornate as these Adams interiors, however, but more
like the picture gallery at nearby Courteenhall.
