“There had been enough raspberry preserve to make a cream crowdie.” (March 6, 1814)

We always have cream crowdie, or cranachan, for dessert at our Burns’ Night reunions, but it’s a good dessert for any kind of feast, provided you can lay your hands on raspberries. Nowadays, of course, you can get frozen fruit at the supermarket at any time of the year – and fresh ones at rather odd seasons, too!

We had a good yield last summer, but we didn't make any preserves, either, instead eating a fresh handful at breakfast each morning.
